3. Research skills, history skills like analysing sources, inferring, mind mapping, organising, questioning sources etc, multi literacies skills ( English) such as planning movie, shooting, scripting, storyboarding
I think that my research skill is not very good as i only manage to research in the internet instead of the library. Furthermore, i tend to copy and paste the source from the web and did not used the ‘PEEL’ method to summaries the source. Thus, i think that my research skill is not so good.
As for my History skill, i think i that it is not up to standard as i sometimes had difficulties in inferring the source and organising my answer. But with the help of the method of drawing a mind map, i can understand the source easily and come up with a conclusion within minutes. Hence, i will still try my best to improve my analysing skills of sources like pictorial and written sources to a good standard.
In the other hand, i learn my multi literacies skills during the lesson of photo journalism and this help me learn how to plan the story and camera angles in every scene. Thus, i think my multi literacies skills had improved.

2. problems encountered and attempts to solve these: what have you learned from this?
The first problem encountered was during the first one to two weeks after the the topic was assigned to each group. I was told to research on the use of propaganda and had gather a lot of information. However, i do not understand most of the resources and do not know how to infer. Luckily, MsLee taught us how to infer the sources during history lesson and this help me a lot when i come to some resources like a pictorial source. From this, i learned that inferring a source was not so difficult but it need a lot of brainstorm before coming to a conclusion.
Another problem encountered was during the first trip to fort siloso. Due to bad weather, we did not enter the propaganda room which is part of our scene in the storyboard. But the weather did not stop us from going to the room. We manage to go there with the tour guide using umbrella and had an interview of the tour guide in the propaganda room. From this, i learned that nothing is impossible if a person have the will to do it.

1.Group work and individual contributions to project- including something on preparing for the presentations and what i learned
having to teach the class
I had contributed to the group by doing some research related to the topic. Being a researcher, i research in the web and sometimes come across some good resources that benefits us. However, i think that i did not do a good job as most of the sources were copyrighted from the web. So nowadays i have been trying to improve by commenting in those propaganda images posted by ZiLu using the ‘PEEL’ method taught by MsLee. Before the presentation, our group met some difficulties like having to contact each other for discussion. After all, we still overcome the difficulties and did the final power point.
Finally, we had our presentation today. It was quite exciting but scary as this was my first time teaching the class. During the presentation, i tried my very best in explaining the British propaganda. However, i do met some difficulties like going out of point in explaining the purpose of the British propaganda. To sum up, i learned that explaining something was really difficult but if we had the might we can still explain it clearly.

Reflection on vikineswari groupI think the presenter, sheng hong was very nervous. He did not ask a lot of “Why”. I do not understand the topic a bit.I know about the suffering and the mindmap is not too detailed. He never gave an explanation about the topic and He should show the video first to make it a SBQ first to make the lesson more interesting. I think he do not need to elaborate on the diseases.

The reflection on Fort siloso
The trip on fort siloso was nice but unfortunately,we did not finished the documentury.I think we spend a lot of time interwing people. In our own opinion,I think the group should seperate the jobs.Altough,we have very little member,we can take 2 to 3 digital camera and maybe ask the people in port siloso to take:example the guide.Anothe thing that I observed is that we group went there and pratise. It is a kind of wasting time. They should pratise in school and go there to act it.One thing our group did good is they took the most important shot in port siloso and the background for it is nice and the unnesseary shots, they took at school.I enjoyed it very much

Although the weather was not bad on that day, the time was not enough. We did not finish all the scenes so we need to finish it at this Friday. I think we wasted a lot of time at running. I think the interview of the foreigners were not necessary because their evidences were not reliable and they would give out the answers that we did not want. I think the filming was quite good. The background was very good. I enjoyed it very much.

Propaganda handbill
British oppression is caricatured in this anti-British propaganda handbill printed by the Indian Independence League in East Asia. The Japanese worked hard at cultivating the nationalistic sentiments of the Indians in Singapore to assist them in their planned conquest of Singapore.

Propaganda leaflet
This pamphlet illustrates how an allied solider would receive food, cigarettes and medical aid if he would simply raise his hands in surrender. Ironically, allied propagandists made identical promises to Japanese soldiers.

Propaganda leaflet
Time and again, illustrations of food were used on propaganda leaflets to tempt allied soldiers. Here, a tempting plate of salad is illustrated and the word “surrender” has been tactfully substituted with the euphanism, “a change of heart”.

Student 1: I think this propaganda is very cute because the human figures are in cartoon form.

Student 2: I think they even don’t know what they are doing. Compare the weapons of the Japanese and the British. Of course British will win the war.Student 1: yes, you are right.
Scene 8: video taken at fort siloso
We take the face of the speaker.
Speaker: As you can see, from the cartoon picture in propaganda, the British wanted to humiliate Japanese, they wanted to show Japanese do not have wisdom, they are doom and weak. Student 2: yes, they are helping us to solve a lot of problems and they are very kind.
Student 1; don’t you think that we were slaves under the British’s control?S
tudent 2: yup, we should only support Japanese because we are the family. British are very cruel.
Scene 13: video taken at fort siloso
While we are showing the Japanese propaganda on the video, the speaker is reading the purpose of the Japanese propaganda.
Speaker:The purpose of the Japanese propaganda is to make people believe that the Japanese are the saviors of Singaporeans and that they are here to liberate us from the real enemies, the British. This was called “Asian to Asian” at that period. It also make people feel that the Japanese are very kind to them and believe that they live very happy under Japanese control, only Japanese are friends people will support the Japanese in the war .furthermore Japanese wanted people in Singapore follow the instructions that Japanese gave them. Scene 14: type out the conclusion.
The use of propaganda by the Japanese were to influence the minds of the people in Singapore, to remove Western influence and to promoted the Japanese spirit (Nippon Seishin) so that the people would be loyal to Japan.

Today, is Nigel’s group turn to present. Their topic was about war experience. I think that Kim had tried his best to project his voice and explained the topic to us. However, he could not answer some question like ”what does the light of the south means? and what the past Japanese flag represent?” ask by Ms Lee and us, the students in 2E. Furthermore, he did not explain clearly about some points like why did ‘kempetai military police station’ is a military police station and not an ordinary police station. Thus, i think that we need to project our voice as loud as possible and explain clearly the points we had during our presentation.

After we discuss in the PW period, we came out a new conclusion that we need to redo the story board. In this new story board, we are going to add British propaganda in to the story board. We will delete the part that shows a person got killed by the Japanese soldier as he/she is unwilling to study/learn propaganda because we thought that was useless for the “use of the propaganda”.

This is a primary source - eyewitness account from a young boy (16 year old) who lived through the war period.
Read and select the relevant parts which describes the type of propaganda used by both sides. You could extract these for your class presentation as ONE of the sources for the class to discuss and answer questions.

I have already spoken to Jia Huan abt the preparation for the class presentation and if you do the work required as I have instructed , you should be more focused on the project theme.
Propaganda - need to be seen from two perspectives: Br and Jap
Also need to see examine different sources of propaganda from different periods with diff purpose: During attack and after Singapore under Jap Rule
So far what u have posted have not addressed these two areas clearly esp the ssecond one
What is Lacking:
1) How will you put together the documentary? What’s your PLAN for the film in terms of the CENTRAL THEME , the mESSAGE u want to convey to the viewers and HOW u are going to ensure that the message gets communicated clearly and convincingly?
If u had done the Protecting Seals documentary in class then maybe you should have learned something abt the director’s vision of what the message of the film is and HOW he is able to persuade the viewer to SEE his POINT of VIEW and FEEL the emotions he want them to feel.
2) How would u USE the research done so far? Actually I find that some research posted is irrelevant - it has NOTHING to do with topic so maybe as a group u need to discuss the central topic again and ask questions to clarify the concept of propaganda
3) Are u going to use PRIMARY sources as example like actual propaganda videos , posters etc and just explain hwo this were used and the message it was supposed to convey? Would this be too FACTUAL and BORING? How would you make the message and the interpretations become more interesting for the veiwers?
4) Have u considered producing your own PROPAGANDA from the JAP and BRitish point of view to show HOW this works in influencing the hearts and minds of people?
5) the inference and drawing conclusions from the various sources of propaganda is still missing - this is a very impt part of your research and u also need to question the bias and reliability of such sources to SHOW how one-sided point of view is communicated in propaganda, who they were targetted at , why they were used, how they worked etc.
6) I also don’t see individual post on reflections on learning so far, like based on trip, course, research done so far. This reflection is VERY IMPT - SHOW your THINKING and ability to use knowledge and skills from different subjects ( Eng Multiliteracies like visual literacy, photo journalism , video and storyboarding skills and use of language to tell a story, to explain, to persuade , to influence others point of view /emotions etc and History knowledge and SKILLS of inference, reliability etc)
Need to come up with a PLAN and schedule of work to be done with clear instructions and more discussion should be seen here at the blog!
